‘Weird Skin’ is the second album from Auld Gods following their debut ‘Older, Wiser?’ in 2022. Auld Gods are loose trio of grumpy old Belfast born musicians who established the band during the pandemic. They work with layers of guitars, synth, keyboards, brass, strings and noise over a rhythm section varying from song to song from bass guitar and drums to bass synths and electronic percussion. The album is stylistically varied reflecting the three very different songwriters.
The album kicks off with ‘Breathe’, very much a rock song with a quiet verse loud chorus pattern, augmented with some quiet strings over a dirty bass and a host of guitars including slide. This is followed immediately by the contrasting ‘Questions’ building from a Fender Rhodes and vocal intro snapping into bass and drums at the minute mark and supporting the lyrics, snatched from overheard conversations, with a variety of guitar and synth riffs building slowly over the song.
The album continues with a mixture of out and out rock songs and diversions into electronica and near folk, experimenting with alternative instrumentation including double bass, strings, brass, saxophones, timpani, uilleann pipes, old synthesisers and plain old noise. All the time working around Marty Williamsons guitars and Davy McLarnons vocals. It's worth a listen through as there’s probably something in here to tickle most sonic taste buds.

The release date will be Friday 1st March when it will be available on most streaming services including:

Track 5: Harvest

Harvest

We're not of the opinion that all politicians are corrupt, that's lazy thinking. There are however some who take the mickey and this little tune kicking off with a nice funky piano line looks forward eagerly to their timely retirement. We'll be glad to see your back!

Track 6: Seaside Town

Seaside Town

This song is about the emergence from the pandemic, its for all of those who lost someone during that time. It talks about returning to the old pre-pandemic pleasures and the difficulties of sometimes doing so. As for the anti-vaxxers, we'll see you in the car park...for a measured debate.

Firefly

70s feel to the chorus in this tune about social media, disinformation and keeping up appearances. Rather nice guitar solo in the middle 8 that ain't from the 70s and some honking saxes in the background.

Inspired by Chris Markers 'La Jetee' this song, driven by drums, bass and moog, casts a jaundiced eye over the state the world as we knock back a beer or two with Cassandra. Great guitar riff in the chorus though!

There are plenty men on this planet that seem to be driving things when they shouldn't, frankly be left safely in charge of a kettle. This one is for them and their hopeful descent into obscurity again.
